The UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office will conduct a 7-days capacity building training on Technical and Equipment Maintenance Proficiency for 50 technicians from 25 community radios in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

The training, slated for April 19-25, 2018, will take place in Dar es Salaam under the technical support from engineers from the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).

The objective of the training is to build capacity of local radios technicians on technical and equipment maintenance proficiency. Specifically, the training will focus on broadcasting hardware and software thus maintain performance and durability of radio equipment.

The training will contribute to strengthening of local radios and thus ensure their sustainability. Activities to be covered during the training include theory in broadcasting and transmission practical as well as physical mentorship program to seven CRs (Mpanda, Nuru, Mtegani, Micheweni, Tumbatu, Mazingira and Orkonerei).

The capacity building training builds upon the experience from similar training conducted in 2016, whereby feedback from the field indicated that the knowledge gained improved technicians’ skills and status of transmission and broadcasting equipment for each of the community radios. With online troubleshooting of technical equipment through a network of technicians created via WhatsApp and Google accounts, community radios were able to be on-air immediately after identifying a technical problem. This mechanism has helped to reduce costs of onsite repair and troubleshooting within the community radios.

UNESCO with the financial assistance from the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) supports community radios and the Community Media Network (Tanzania Development Information Organization- TADIO).

Community radios in attendance under the SDC support with their regions in brackets are Nuru FM (Iringa), Pambazuko FM (Morogoro), Fadhila FM (Mtwara) Jamii Mtukwao FM (Mtwara), Loliondo FM (Arusha), Baloha FM (Shinyanga), Kahama FM (Shinyanga) Ileje FM (Songwe) and Tripple A FM (Arusha).
